The whole picture

Three questions the public record can answer

Use grant filings to find funders, public records to review donors and partners, and monitoring to track your reputation.

Where the money already goes

Grant Matching

We match your programs against millions of paid grants using the recipient, amount, and purpose in each funder’s filings.

Whether the money is safe to take

Donor Due Diligence

A dated, sourced, analyst-reviewed report on a major donor, a prospective board member, or a corporate partner: litigation, criminal and regulatory exposure, business entanglements, adverse media, and political giving — read against your mission, before the pledge is signed.

What gets said afterwards

Listening & AI Narratives

Your donors check the reviews, scroll the mentions, and increasingly just ask an AI whether you are worth giving to. We watch 14 platforms and the press, and run your organization through ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity to grade what they actually say.

Use Donor Due Diligence to review the funders Grant Matching identifies before signing a pledge agreement.

Some of that public record is now free to browse. Our Open Foundations explorer lists, state by state, the 8,971 private foundations that tell the IRS they accept unsolicited grant requests, with the deadline, the restrictions and the contact printed as filed. Of the 131,545 foundations that answer that question at all, only 27,218 say yes, so knowing which ones do is most of the work.

Every foundation reports the grants it paid — recipient, amount, and purpose in its own words. We match your programs against millions of them, then name the trustees who decide.

  • Matched to funders’ past grants
  • Screened for funders who give outside their own circle
  • Officers and directors named, with the grant that proves the match

Frequently Asked Questions

Civly Nonprofits, answered.

How do we find foundations that actually fund work like ours?

Start from what they paid, not what they say. Grant Matching reads every grant a private foundation reported on its 990-PF and every charity-to-charity grant on Schedule I, matches your programs against millions of them by purpose language, geography and grant size, attaches the deadline and eligibility terms the funder discloses, and names the officers and trustees who decide.

How do we vet a major donor or board candidate before accepting the gift?

With a Donor Due Diligence report: court dockets and opinions, regulatory actions, corporate registries, securities filings, liens, judgments and property records, sanctions and exclusion lists, 990 board and officer positions, campaign finance disclosure, and news across hundreds of outlets, every finding dated, attached to a primary document, graded and read by an analyst against your mission and gift acceptance policy. It runs entirely on public records, so the donor does not hear about it from us.

Most foundations say they do not accept unsolicited proposals. Is grant research still worth it?

Yes, because the filings show which ones mean it. A foundation that only funds a preselected circle shows the same recipients year after year and names the relationship between grantee and manager; those rank last. What surfaces instead are funders with a demonstrated pattern of backing organizations they had no prior tie to, and a private foundation that accepts unsolicited requests has to state on its 990-PF where applications go, the deadline, and any limits by geography or field.

Can you write the grant application too?

Yes. Grant Matching ends at the match sheet, and AI Operator picks it up from there, drafting the proposal against what that funder’s own filings show it actually pays for rather than its priorities page, with a human analyst reviewing before it goes out.

How is Grant Matching different from a grant database?

Civly matches your programs to grants funders have paid, then checks eligibility and deadlines. Matches account for grant size, geography, and whether a funder gives to organizations outside its existing network.

Is Donor Due Diligence the same as a background check?

No. A background check answers whether a record exists. Donor Due Diligence answers whether accepting this gift, this board seat, or this sponsorship creates a problem for your organization specifically — every finding dated, attached to a primary document, graded for how much it should weigh, and read by an analyst against your mission before it reaches you.

We are a small shop. Is this built for organizations our size?

Yes. We start from your existing filings and match you with grants suited to your organization’s size. You can use any product on its own.

Does any of this touch our donor records?

Not unless you ask it to. Grant Matching and Donor Due Diligence run against public filings and published sources. Client data stays inside the engagement it belongs to; the shared layer is public and licensed source data, not anything you give us.

Start with your EIN, or with a name

Send us your EIN and we will show you who is already funding work like yours. Send us a donor’s name and we will show you what a report covers.
